Listen to Paul’s audio version of this article below:
There is one practice that has transformed my life more than anything else. Not a seminar. Not a strategy. Not even a breakthrough conversation. It is this: spending the first hour of my day alone with God.
For years I would have told you that “Top of the Hour” was the most powerful practice I had ever discovered. It is still vital and supplementary. But this—this first hour with God in the morning—has become the single most powerful thing I do.
I want to share it with you, step by step, so that you can begin to experience the same reset of mind, spirit, and life.
1. The First Act Of The Day: Sit With God
When I wake up, I do not reach for my phone. I do not check messages. I do not dive into tasks. I sit. Sometimes on the side of the bed. Sometimes outside, depending on the season and the weather. But the key is this: I sit with God.
Not talking at first. Not doing. Simply being with Him. No music. No distractions. No noise. Just intentional presence.
This is not about religious performance. It is about relationship. It is about acknowledging that before anything else happens in my day, God is here, and my life is in relation to Him.
2. Conscious Breathing In God’s Presence
As I sit, I begin to breathe—slow, conscious, deliberate breathing. I become aware of three things at once:
- My breath.
- My body.
- His presence.
I am not trying to impress God with eloquent words. I am simply present with Him. Every breath becomes a way of saying, “I am here. You are here. This day is Yours.”
In a secular sense, you could call this mindfulness or groundedness.
From a Christian perspective, it is a prayerful presence—spirit, soul, and body aligning before the One who created them.
3. Hydration As Worship: The Power Of Living Water
During this time I drink a litre of water—with a small, healthy pinch of salt. Not a salty brine that your body will reject. Just the tip of a teaspoon in a litre of water. Enough to support hydration, not to overwhelm the system.
Why does this matter?
Because your body is not separate from your spiritual life. You are not a disembodied soul accidentally living in a body. God created you integrated—spirit, soul, and body together. So as I sit, breathe, and drink, something powerful happens:
- My body wakes up.
- My mind begins to clear.
- My spirit becomes more attentive.
In other words, I start the day aligned, not fragmented.
4. Turning To God: Theo‑Christological Focus
Once I have settled into His presence—breathing, sitting, hydrating—I begin the first major movement of this hour: Theo‑Christological reflection.
That simply means I turn my heart, mind, and attention fully toward:
- Jehovah, the Father.
- Jesus Christ, the second person in the Godhead.
- The Holy Spirit, the third person in the Godhead.
I speak to them individually and collectively, because they are One and yet distinct in personhood. In this phase I:
- Thank Him for life, mercy, and grace.
- Express gratitude that I get to live this day in relation to Him.
- Acknowledge His sovereignty over everything that will unfold—victories, struggles, and all.
This is not theological theory. It is relational reality.
From a secular vantage point, you might call it “orienting to your highest values and ultimate reference point.”
As a Christian, I call it returning to the Source of all reality and centering my life on Him.
5. Moving Into The Human: Relationships, Work, and Calling
From there, I move into what I often refer to as the human realm—my life, relationships, responsibilities, and work. I reflect on and bring before God:
- My personal life and character.
- My relationships—family, friends, community.
- My work with Lighthouse.
- The humans I am called to serve, help, and liberate.
I talk with God about:
- People trapped in mental, emotional, and spiritual bondage.
- Those oppressed by systems, establishments, and lies.
- The work we are doing to bring truth, light, and liberation into their lives.
This is where spiritual reflection becomes practical alignment. I am not just “having a quiet time.” I am planning the day with God, in relation to His will and His work:
- “What are we doing today?”
- “What do You want me to see?”
- “Where are the people You are calling me to serve?”
- “How do we address the establishment and its distortions—especially in the lives of Christians?”
6. Our Enemies And His: Facing Opposition In Truth
A crucial part of this hour is acknowledging that we are in a conflict. Not just psychological. Not just social. A spiritual conflict.
I talk to God about our enemies—those who oppose His work in us and through us, whether human, systemic, or spiritual. Why? Because:
“Our enemies are His, and His are ours.”
This does not mean we hate people. It means we recognise that any system, ideology, or individual that stands in the way of truth, love, and liberation is ultimately in opposition to God.
From a Christian biblical frame, there is a real adversary: Satan.
From even a secular frame, we can see that there are forces—internal and external—that resist growth, freedom, and truth.
This morning’s hour is where I:
- Name those realities honestly.
- Refuse to be naïve about them.
- Ask God for wisdom, protection, and strategy.
7. The “Start Of The Day” Phenomenon
What I have just described is not a casual ritual. It is what I call the start of the day phenomenon.
The way you begin your day shapes:
- Your mindset.
- Your choices.
- Your relationships.
- Your work.
- Your eternity.
If the first hour of your day is with God, in conscious presence, gratitude, reflection, and alignment, the rest of your day unfolds in relation to Him.
And here is the sober reality:
- If you live in rebellion, you are in rebellion in relation to Him.
- If you live in atheism, you are denying the God who is still the reference point.
- If you live in agnosticism, your uncertainty is still about Him.
- Even Satan is Satan in relation to God, defined by opposition to His holiness and truth.
Whether in hell or heaven, whether in faith or rebellion, life is always in relation to God. There is no neutral ground.
So when I give God this first hour, I am acknowledging a fact that is true whether I like it or not:
“Every second of this day, and the rest of eternity, is in relation to You.”
8. You Can Do This—Wherever You Are
Now you might be thinking, “Paul, I do not have an hour to sit quietly every morning.”
Listen:
- You can start with half an hour.
- You can do it at home, or even while you are driving or in transit, as you grow into the habit.
- You can build this gradually, but make God your first priority, not an afterthought.
The non‑negotiables are:
- Conscious presence with God.
- Breathing with awareness.
- Hydrating your body as you awaken your spirit.
- Talking to Him about your life, work, enemies, and calling.
- Framing the entire day in relation to Him.
Whether you describe this from a secular vantage as intentional, values‑driven living, or from a Christian vantage as prayer and fellowship with the Triune God, the impact is profound:
- Your mind resets.
- Your spirit settles.
- Your purpose sharpens.
- Your heart softens.
- Your courage grows.
9. A Prayer For The Vulnerable And The Suffering
I do not end this hour focused only on myself.
I bring before God:
- The vulnerable.
- The suffering.
- Those trapped in fear, confusion, or oppression.
- Those whom God is sending us to help.
I ask Him to lead us, myself, and our wider community, into the lives of those He has commanded us to serve. I ask for forgiveness where we fall short and grace to walk faithfully. Because this is about a living relationship with God that overflows into the liberation of others.
10. An Invitation
I cannot live your life for you. But I can invite you into the practice that has changed mine.
Tomorrow morning, before you touch your phone, before you step into the noise:
- Sit.
- Breathe.
- Hydrate.
- Turn your attention to God.
- Talk with Him about your life, your work, your relationships, your enemies, your calling.
- Acknowledge that every moment of this day is in relation to Him.
Do this consistently, and you will discover what I have:
This is not just a routine. It is the most powerful hour of your life.
Love you loads. Miss you loads.
God bless you.

Paul, thank you so much for this invitation, insight and love. The insights you’ve shared about how you spends your mornings are not a surprise because of your commitment to value and therefore to God. This something I’ve felt much more need for recently. While I try to make sure the first thing I read or listen to is God’s Word and to pray, I know I’m not soaking up time with my Father. And it’s not just the mornings too. Something I’m wrestling with – my flesh and my spirit are – is my evenings. Deep down I loathe stimulating my mind with the screen and noise before sleeping. I can’t control my thoughts, they just go like a motorway of cars all the time, so I’m having to intervene and slow down to get control and speak The Word of God over my mind. It helps and it is a battle I need to win, because I’m so used to just numbing my mind with senseless content and videos to waste time. The same for the mornings, to enter into that battle when I wake up. Even now, I know there’s tension and resistance to truly sitting with my Father, openly and intimately to really be close. But I know there is endless freedom in it. Thank you Paul – thank you God almighty, our Father in Heaven.
I understand your struggle a lot! Even if I don’t go to bed having been on technology, my mind races at night. Will be praying for you in your battle, and please pray in mine, if you may!
I absolutely love this. I will read it over and over again. Thank you so much for all of your insights, and thank you to God and our Lord Jesus Christ for being with you in every moment, as He is with us all.
God bless you in your health, Paulie. Loads of love to you x x x
This is so powerful! I have tried a couple of times to do this although not exactly as you have described and have had mixed results. You’ve inspired me here to try again and renew that commitment to give the first fruits of the day to our Lord. It is something I would love to improve and know it would be good for me and my relationship with Him.
Thank you Paul for sharing this. You are continually seeking to improve your relationship and closeness to God and helping others do the same, especially in a world so dominated by material flesh and distraction. God bless you…
What a stunning way to start the day!
I’m in the habit of thanking God for a peaceful night and for the gift of this day, but what you have shared here is a real and true building of the relationship with God that is so important to me and each of us.
Thank you for sharing something so personal and for giving me the chance to learn and live a better life.
May God bless you and thank you!
Thank you Paul for this guidance of the power of starting the day with God. Giving the first hour to Him, before phones or distractions, is such a powerful spiritual practice. While it is challenging to be still and not to let my mind take over, this shifts my perspective on mornings and how I want to live each day in alignment with God’s presence and purpose. I really appreciate you sharing this and helping us to get out of automation and in touch with who we are as human beings. God bless you! 🙏
Starting to do this over the last couple of days I have found it to be an enriching and nourishing experience. Yet I appreciate it’s the consistency that is the key. There are fundamentals to living in a healthy way and this time with God at the start of the day forms the basis of a firm foundation, not just for the day, but for our lives!
This morning I found myself jotting down questions to bring to God in prayer and in reflection. This is the sort of thing that I don’t do that I ought to. More than anything, I know that I don’t use my mornings as well as I need to and so I can see this sacred time gives me the best opportunity to live meaningfully and purposefully.
I’m praying to be able to build and grow this practice into my life in a way that grows my relationship with God on a day-by-day, moment-by-moment basis.
Thank you Paul! This is absolutely stunning and I think one of the most important things here is consistency! Consistency is key and personally I know that sitting in the presence of God consistently, is like no other nourishment. Thank you for the breakdown and practicality 🙏
What Paulie has shared on the start of the day, the first hour, is a real and true building of the relationship with God that is so important to me and each of us. I don’t give myself that much care in the mornings, so to dedicate that time to Him and by so doing care for myself in the process will be a real sure start to every day.
Thank you so much Paul. As other comments are saying here, this is so powerful and I can see how the way we live and our our world operates, what it prizes and focuses on the most and how we’ve been conditioned ourselves is all taking us away from this very thing! This has really made me think about and ponder how I start my days and how much I see time with God as such a scarce resource because “there’s so much to do”. But what I love about what you’re sharing here and that’s so humbling too to see how little I recognise this and act on it, is that such a practice is about relationship. It’s about our relationship with God and that’s what absolutely matters most! Before and above everything else. Which means my and I expect almost everyone’s priorities are so completely upside down and back to front. As Christians we are called to love God with all our heart, mind, soul and strength.. it’s living in such ways as this that we actually practice that!
Such a powerful prayer, and such an inspiring way and spiritual way to start the day, just sitting with God, to get the spiritual hydration and drinking to get the physical hydration…
Thank you so much, God bless x x
Having that special sacred time, to connect, to bond with our Father…
Amen…
Booommm!!! It’s power to start the day vibrantly, it sets the tone for the rest of the day, and that then unfolds into the rest of our lives. My mornings have slowly been moving towards this dynamic structure, but are still loose, with the frequent shifting of when I wake up. I’ve found it all important to start the day in the right way, with God at the centre. I’m feeling the value of the structure a lot, the components and the intention, such as drinking water to wake the body up in the right way. God bless you for this!
I heard somewhere a while back about “setting a date with God” in which you spend an hour with Him as if it were a date. You reminded me of that, Paul, and I always have made excuses-too much schoolwork, too much stress and work at my job, too much “doing” and not enough “being”. Your routine is inspiring me to start with 15 minutes to 30 minutes at the start of the day with God. Starting small makes an hour feel less stressful. God bless you and the others at Lighthouse!
Awesome Beth. God bless you… one day at a time.
