Good evening everyone,
Here’s today’s Daily Prayer:
Let’s pray, Father—our stunning, stunning Lord and Saviour, the one and only true God. The only God that doesn’t have idols. The God, the one true God, the one supreme God, the one eternal, infinite God that indeed, Lord, has value: theochristological value, human value, material value, all its kinds—creation, financial value, and the like. You are a God of value, not a God of idols, but a God of value, unlike Satan, who is a god of idol. His very brand—his satanic brand—posing as an angel of light, is an idol in itself.
Father, I come before you today to just thank you for the realisation I made at 3 o’clock this morning, waking up bolt upright in bed. How I realised something that blew my mind, and I’ll never see you, and never see the world, and never see my sin and sin in general in the same way. It absolutely blew my mind, Father, and I want to share this this morning in this group prayer, through prayer with you as part of the conversation directly, because it’s that important, Father.
I’ve always been amazed at your Ten Commandments and how those ten parts of law are so perfect, so solid, so profound, so complete. It’s like a Rubik’s Cube. And for the purposes of this prayer relay, Father—the story of this highly intellectual professor who became, not a Christian straight away, but a believer in you, realised that you existed, when he decided to look at Moses, look at the Bible, and read it for himself with a highly critical view. And the whole way through Genesis and most of Exodus, he said that there’s no real proof for it.
No Adam and Eve. Like, there’s no real proof that you made the earth like you said—whether it was six days, or however long that six days, a day is, and what type of day. Father, this person looked at the Bible, and when there was no proof for Adam and Eve, and no proof that they were perfect, and no proof that God created—there’s no proof for any of it. And then suddenly, this professor got to the Ten Commandments in the Bible, and he suddenly looked at Moses, and looked at Moses’ background, and he realised that Moses came from… he was married to a Midianite, he grew up in the Egyptian household.
And that they were not masters of law. It was “do as I say and not do as I do.” It was Pharaoh who just called it as he wanted. The law was more superstition. And yet they were ahead of the game in terms of society in those days. But my Lord, here is Moses, who is this sophisticated law-maker, and here he goes, takes them out of Egypt—could have been a story; took them to Mount Sinai—could have been a story; went up there, you know, saw the burning bush—the bush didn’t burn—could have been a story.
Went up the mountain for a week—could have been a story; came back with clay tablets—could have been a story. And this is where it gets real for the prof. He looks at the Ten Commandments and goes, “No ways anybody could come up with that but a supernatural, perfect being.” Because there came a perfect law, starting with your first law: you must love your God with all your heart and soul.
And then they ought not to be idols, and then all the way down. Father, it suddenly dawned on me at 3 o’clock this morning, thanks to you, Father, how perfect the law is. That because that is there—because the law is there—it’s the anchor for the rest of the Bible. Because in that is your perfect law, A; and in that is our almost perfect inability to live it. Hence, faith is so important. Hence, redemption is so important. Hence, forgiveness is so important. Hence, your Kingdom is so important. Because we can be redeemed through faith, through Christ and his ransom sacrifice, but we cannot live this perfect law, let alone even fully understand it.
And then it dawned on me—bolt upright in bed, Father—that just like the fruit of the Spirit starts with love, and out of love comes all the parts of love: joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, self-control, and so on and so forth… look at the Ten Commandments. You’ve got the main law at the top: you must love your God with all your heart, mind, and soul. And then: no other gods. And then: you will not bow down to idols. And suddenly I realised my life is full of idols, and the biggest idol was me. In the name of self-development, in the name of growth, when I started to look for that—at making other people gods and other people idols—and it shocked me to my core.
Even in the theochristological world there are idols. Pagan religions in the name of Christ are full of idols when you’ve clearly said not to have them. And there are many religions in the name of Christ—denominations etc.—and religion, that’s how they see it, Father. The bottom line is, I suddenly realised that through the theochristological there are idols as gods.
There are material idols and there are financial idols. And you go, well, what makes the difference between a financial idol and the financial in you, Father? The difference is the attitude to it. For example: I lay there thinking about it. When does money become an idol? When money becomes an end to itself, rather than a means. Rather than a resource.
It becomes an end to itself and in itself. Materialism: when it becomes an end in itself—just accumulating stuff—instead of it being a resource, instead of it being a means, value becomes an end… value.
Just like in the human world—doesn’t it become a connection, a marriage, a relationship? It becomes an end where you feel you own your children, and own your husband, and own your wife, and own your friendship, and own your social circle. Where your house becomes an end to show off and be someone, rather than a means to an end—which is shelter, simple. We turn our houses into idols. Money into idols.
Satan, the father of the lie, is worshipped through idols that are your creation. And Father, it absolutely stunned me, and I want to leave this prayer to say thank you—that I can now share this with others. Starting with this prayer this morning. I will never see the world the same way again. I will never see pleasure in the same way again.
Because pleasure can be an idol, or it can be a gift and value from you. That a love interest can be an idol. Your wife, your husband can be an idol. Your children can be idols—depending on how you see them, treat them, laud them, protect them, promote them, boast about them. I have been that person, and I am ashamed. And I come before you asking forgiveness. And for anyone else who wants forgiveness on this call, in this prayer.
We ask you to guide, Father, us through this day—to protect us from ourselves and our idols, and to never bow down to an idol again. Because Father, now that we know that, just like Belshazzar, who was struck down in one night because he suddenly realised—he realised that he was bowing down to idols and that it was disrespecting you. He knew it. Nebuchadnezzar went out for seven years because he became a god to himself.
We go on and on and on. But from now on, Father, I look at things and go: am I saying this as an idol? Am I doing an act of worship? Am I doing an act of an obeisance to your creation? Or am I treating it as a resource? Am I putting it in its place? It suddenly dawned on me: you could stop my heart or just release me to the demons without your protection because I’m bowing down to idols as they are.
And then suddenly all these idols were in front of me. I suddenly realised I’ve had hundreds of idols throughout my life. Idols in music, idols in love, idols in money, idols in the material realm, idols in the human dimension, idols even in you in different ways. Just couldn’t believe it. When it came down to it, it’s a book in itself at least.
We ask you your forgiveness, our Lord, to guide us and to have us put our idols away, and to show obeisance, worship, love, admiration, service to you—in the Spirit, out of the flesh. The flesh is full of idols, and when we realise that even addictions are idols—the idols that govern these addictions in Satan are immense—where literally food can be an idol…
Or it can be a means, it can be a resource. Please forgive us. We ask you this, Father, in full repentance, putting away our idolatry in your Spirit, through your Son—King and Redeemer, Command and Chief, our Dad.
Amen.
God’s grace to you,

Amen! Thank you for this prayer to really drive home the reality of how we idolise so much within our flesh, so much of where our focus ought to be, is focussed on material, transient things and exalting their importance. I thank God that I am working in this area now with an intensity I haven’t had before. Thank you for this timely prayer 🙏
Really powerful insight into how we become disobedient and worship something other than God. Bless you for your heartfelt inspired prayer.
This prayer really moved me. It made me realise how often my heart gets pulled toward things that promise comfort or control, and how easily I let them take God’s place without even noticing. I truly want to repent of that. I want my worship to be real, not distracted or divided. Thank you for putting words to something I’ve been feeling — it’s helping me come back to God with a more honest and surrendered heart.
I love this prayer — it shows so clearly how much we need God in every single way and in every faculty of life. That’s why He gave us His commandments: so we could live in line with Him and His purposes. Thank you so much, Paul. Amen.
Thank you Paul for such a powerful prayer. It was a revelation that I treated myself as an idol and that any addiction is about idolatry and self-worship. We live in a culture where we’re actively steered towards ‘feeling better’, but often using things that are unhealthy to achieve this means… which may mean an excess of what is healthy!
I also appreciate the example of the professor who was skeptical, but not cynical, to be forensic in his approach to Christianity. To make the distinction that someone like Moses could never conceive the 10 commandments without supernatural inspiration shows evidence of intellectual rigour as well as a lack of spiritual blindness.
There is a huge amount we can learn from this example in terms of being able to overcome personal biases and prejudice through critical thinking.
Thank you for sharing your personal experience of your waking up and making a profound realisation Paul through your prayer. Waking me up to that which I idolise over God.
God bless us all and I pray we put our idolatry away, Amen
Thank you for helping me to see the reality of how much we get lost in things and create idols out of money, material things and also out of people.
The 10 commandments start with “You shall have no other gods before me” and I realise that I never questioned the deeper meaning of that and how it relates to my day to day life, my feelings and my thoughts and the consequences of that.
It was a big revelation to me, when a couple of years ago, I realised how I idolised so many people in my own life (like parents and mentors) and how I looked up to sportsmen (like Lewis Hamilton) with so much unquestioned idolatry. Once making the distinction that if I need to have an idol / hero in my life then the only entity that can fulfil that role is God. All others must not be on any kind of podium that i place them on, because they are not capable of being that hero or idol in my life. It’s actually unfair of me to place them there and give them that level of ‘worship’ because they too are human, make mistakes and don’t need the immense pressure of trying to live up to my perfect delusion of who they are.
God Himself is perfect, He deserves and is worthy of my respect, obviously. Now having made this distinction I am free to actually see people for ho they are, drop a lot of my attachment to someone else’s perception and opinion of me, and therefore ironically, love others better because I’m less dependent on their opinion.
A lesson I wish I had learnt at 13!!
Amen. Lord please clear my heart and soul to genuinely hold you as my most precious and Most High. Lord, please help me see the evil of this world, the darkness surrounding us all. Thank you for being You Lord God Almighty in Jesus’ Name, the One true living God.
Thank you Paul. God bless you sir, God keep you and restore you wholly as his loyal servant.
Amen – thank you for this prayer and please help me Heavenly Father to repent for my sins.
