Paul S Waugh’s Daily Prayer – A Prayer of True Thankfulness – 14th Jan, 2026

Greetings in Christ everyone,

Here’s today’s Daily Prayer:

Father, we appreciate it immensely, Father, growing in our gratitude for You. Please bless us to—to… you know, there used to be a prayer at boarding school and in various other organisations I was involved in, and the prayer went like this. It was a prayer for food, and it went:

“May the Lord make us truly thankful. Amen.”

That was it. I could never understand that at first. Coming from a Jehovah’s Witness background, which is very works-based—very Catholic, very works—I thought, Why? Can’t we make ourselves thankful? Why do we need the Lord to make us thankful? Why don’t we thank the Lord instead of asking Him to make us thankful?

But it’s the most accurate prayer I’ve ever heard, because let’s face it—we’re never truly thankful. At best, we’re relieved or excited that we received something. Relieved or excited, never thankful. Not deeply thankful.

And you know how I know that? Because I say, “Why are you thankful for that?” I know you’re excited, but why? I know you’re sad or relieved—but why are you thankful? Can you give me some of the values that you’re thankful for? They’re not thankful. They can’t answer. They have no absolute—no relevance to that, Father. Absolute none. And that is where it is.

As far as that is concerned, it’s just insane. It’s insane. And we ask You to help us be thankful. Truly. Because it’s in that—the fruits of the Spirit. And we ask You, Father, to bless us, to forgive us our many sins and shortcomings. In Jesus Christ’s name, Amen.

God’s grace to you,

Paul S. Waugh

Thank you for this prayer. Wow—what a dose of reality and humility this brings. There is so much to be thankful for, yet we rarely truly recognise it. Thank you for this important distinction; it will help so many, starting with ourselves. God bless you, Paul, and God bless us all. Amen. x x

Rejoice at all times. Pray without ceasing. Give thanks in every circumstance, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. – 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Something I am trying hard, with God’s merciful help, to live… thank you Paul for this heartfelt call to truly be grateful to our glorious Father

Thank you for this prayer and helping myself and others understand why we actually don’t understand thankfulness despite thinking we do. Heavenly Father please help us with this endeavour.

I listened to a video recently and had such a huge paradigm shift because what was shared was that every single moment is grace, every single one. In the incredible times and in the difficult times..every moment is grace. I have, we have SO much to appreciate, each moment is one we do not even deserve. It is only through our Father’s mercy that we have these undeserved, unmerited moments and they are given to us as a gift. Thank you for this prayer.

Thank you for this guidance to always give thanks to God and to ask Him for a greater ability to give thanks.

Amen. I was not raised to be truly thankful, only to exhibit the social graces in word. This prayer is a valuable reminder to be thankful, starting with praying for it.

Father, you give us so much, and I know I do not thank you as much as I ought. I pray that you grace me with the greatest possible appreciation for everything that you do for me and all of us. Amen x x

Thank you for this prayer. This resonates very strongly and personally with me the more ungrateful I realise I truly am and the more I am trying to work on true gratitude and humble thankfulness. Father, I pray like Paul that you help me and us all here to become more deeply thankful through the gift of your spirit 🙏 Amen.
