“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?” — Matthew 7:3
There is a psychological pattern running through the BBC’s treatment of Lighthouse Global, through Catrin Nye’s presentation of her sources and through the Reddit culture that supplied so much of the narrative.
It is projection.
Lighthouse was publicly branded to millions by the BBC as a “life-coaching cult” that “ruined people’s lives”. Yet the fully evidenced reality we are documenting is that the campaign built around that accusation has damaged and destroyed our livelihoods, relationships, health, safety and ability to continue years of empirical research and community development work. The people accusing us of Life Destruction helped create the conditions for Life Destruction, and then placed the moral sickness of those conditions upon their target.
That is the contradiction at the heart of “God Help You, Catrin Nye”. The letter does not merely say that Catrin Nye was wrong about Lighthouse Global. It asks a far more searching question: what happens psychologically, morally and spiritually when an accuser attributes to another person the very pattern their own conduct is producing?

Projection Is Not a Remote Clinical Curiosity
The American Psychological Association defines projection as a defence mechanism in which unacceptable impulses, ideas, feelings or responsibilities are attributed to others. A simple example is the movement from “I hate them” to “They hate me.” Projection can preserve a preferred picture of the self by relocating what conscience does not want to face.[1]
I am not pretending to diagnose Catrin Nye or every person she used as a source. A clinical diagnosis cannot responsibly be made from a documentary, a Reddit account or a public dispute. But we can examine conduct. We can compare accusation with action. We can ask who created which conditions, who pursued who, who exercised power, who suffered which consequences and who then claimed the position of victim.
Careless psychological labelling would, in fact, merely repeat the very wrong being exposed here. Projection must not become a fashionable insult. It is a hypothesis to be tested against evidence.
The test is straightforward:
- What exactly is being alleged?
- What conduct is the accuser themselves engaged in?
- What consequences did that conduct create?
- Were those consequences then attributed to the target’s supposed nature?
- When contrary evidence appeared, was it examined — or attacked because it threatened the story?
Our contention is that the answers reveal not one isolated contradiction but a repeating structure.
“They Tend to Call People What They Themselves Are, Pathologically and Characteristically”
I have previously observed that the likes of the BBC and their sources tend to call people what they themselves are, pathologically and characteristically. And because they have the reach, they have made the greatest impact on the public. Their attack is a confession by conduct.
That is not a licence to answer every accusation by shouting, “No, you are!” That would be circular. But that circularity demands us to examine conduct rather than surrender to labels.
We were called coercively controlling by people attempting to control the public’s access to our evidence. We were accused of silencing critics while those critics refused to enter sustained, evidence-led dialogue, participating instead in a campaign that made others afraid to speak for us and to us. The grand irony is that this entire life-destructive campaign is an attempt to silence us! We were called exploitative while our pain, private records, relationships and work were turned into public propaganda material by Catrin Nye and her BBC team.
A Very British Cult was aired to millions with Catrin Nye actively seeking fame and glory at award ceremonies and speaking events. We were accused of ruining lives while our own lives were subjected to a vast institutional machine of humiliation, suspicion, stigma and exclusion.
The point is not that every criticism of Lighthouse must therefore be false. Even if every lie they told about us at Lighthouse Global were true — and they are evidentially and provably not — it would not negate their evil or one single wrongdoing of theirs. Not one.
This reality cuts both ways. Another person’s wrongdoing does not absolve us. Our alleged wrongdoing could never absolve Catrin Nye, her sources or the BBC. Each claim must be tested. Each act must be owned. Each human being remains responsible and accountable to God alone.
As Scripture says:
“You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things.” — Romans 2:1
The Apostle Paul here is not teaching that all judgment is forbidden. He is exposing hypocritical judgment: condemning in another what we refuse to confront in ourselves. If we therefore as Christians want to be free of that hypocrisy, then all hypocrisy must be called out.
First Create the Conditions — Then Call the Consequences Proof
The most destructive form of projection does more than transfer a trait. It can help produce in the target the very distress later cited against them.
Construct a frightening public identity. Remove context. Give accusations institutional authority. Invite an audience to distrust the target. Affect work, relationships and safety. Keep the target under continuing scrutiny while denying them proportionate means to answer. Then point to their exhaustion, urgency, anger, fear, defensive intensity or psychological distress and say: “There! That proves what we told you!”
The campaign creates the conditions and then treats the human consequences as evidence of the target’s pathology.
This is why my open letter says:
“This document has been written directly from the heart, shaped by the raw, lived reality of the last 3.5 years.” — Open letter: God Help Catrin Nye, Section 1, paragraph 6.2
Rawness did not appear in a vacuum. Nor can it honestly be detached from years of public accusation, legal pressure, social hostility, fear, depleted resources and the burden of preserving evidence while our public mischaracterisation was being written by other people.
This is where Life Destruction becomes circular. The target is isolated by a manufactured identity. Their isolation makes it harder to correct that identity or to disprove that identity. The difficulty for anyone smeared comes when their efforts to correct this caricature identity is then maliciously treated as further proof that the false identity was accurate. Every wound inflicted by the narrative is made to testify on behalf of the narrative.
That is not investigation. It is a closed psychological and editorial loop.
The Reddit Echo Chamber and Group Projection
Projection can become collective.
For instance, an online group forms around a shared enemy. Members reinforce one another’s interpretation, reward escalating allegations and reinterpret contrary evidence as further proof of manipulation. Personal disappointments, unresolved conflicts, resentment, rivalry, shame or a need for significance can be reorganised into one morally flattering identity: we are the survivors; they are the abusers.
Some individuals may have sincere grievances. Some may accurately remember real hurt. Some may be mistaken. Some may withhold decisive context. Some may knowingly and intentionally deceive. Those categories must never be collapsed. Pain deserves to be heard, but pain does not make every interpretation true. Sincerity is not verification. Because when those categories collapse, you lose all the real and raw experience of human relationships, disagreements, quarrels, resolutions and everything in between.
The Anti-Lighthouse Reddite Cult became useful to the BBC because their collective story supplied characters, emotional certainty and a ready-made moral frame that was particularly interesting to them to fit into the “true crime” market.
Ironically, Catrin Nye accused Lighthouse of playing into the “life coach zeitgeist”, even though not only is this not true, but we have evidence of this work going back decades, proving that our work and research was far from the opportunistic leap she suggested. Again, projection.
The journalist’s duty was therefore not merely to find people willing to accuse myself and others at Lighthouse Global. It was to test them, test us, test the records and test the narrative she herself was building.
“The first to present his case seems right, till another comes forward and questions him.” — Proverbs 18:17
A serious investigation does not fear the second voice. It seeks it. It does not offer a few final words after eighteen months of construction and call that equality. It gives contrary evidence the capacity to alter the production. It enters into dialogue over nuance; it doesn’t pick a side and then call itself impartial.
From Projection to Reversal of Victim and Offender
Psychologist Jennifer Freyd coined the term DARVO: Deny, Attack, and Reverse Victim and Offender. It describes a pattern in which a person confronted about wrongdoing denies the conduct, attacks the challenger and presents themselves as the victim while recasting the challenger as the offender.[2] Experimental research by Sarah Harsey and Jennifer Freyd found that exposure to DARVO can affect observers’ perceptions of victim and perpetrator credibility.[3]
Again, this concept must be applied carefully. I say this because a BBC source and ‘cult expert’ Alexandra Stein applied it to Lighthouse, while engaging in DARVO herself. So it must be examined properly. It is not proof that whoever claims victimhood is secretly guilty, although that is what it can end up implying. But it gives us a disciplined question: when challenged with evidence, does the person answer the evidence? Do they engage, do they repent? Do they seek to resolve the issue?
Look at the sequence alleged in our case. Lighthouse Global is accused before a mass audience. We’ve consistently attempted to bring records, recordings and context. Our attempts to confront the falsified public record are then represented as threatening, obsessive or further evidence of the very character assigned to us. Catrin Nye and the BBC occupy the protected role of investigators while the investigated are denied equivalent power to investigate the investigation, and indeed, the investigators.
The accuser becomes the endangered party. The target becomes the aggressor for refusing to remain inside the role written for them.
This is why the letter addresses Catrin Nye human-to-human:
“Catrin, you cannot escape personal liability for life destruction forever.” — Open letter: God Help Catrin Nye, Section 4, Paragraph 1.3
That sentence breaks the reversal. It restores moral agency. It says that institutional prestige does not transform the author of consequences into a passive observer of them.
The Projection of “Cult”
The word “cult” did immense psychological work in this campaign. It did not merely describe. It instructed the audience how to interpret everything that followed.
If we spoke firmly, that was control. If we defended one another, that was group conditioning. If we challenged sources, that was intimidation. If we documented contradictions, that was obsession. If we turned to Christ, that was a rebrand. If we showed distress, that was instability. If we remained standing, that was proof of dangerous commitment.
The label created a world in which no response could reject the label.
But what happens when the accusers themselves display the closed features they attribute to their target: loyalty to a fixed narrative, punishment of dissent, moral division between protected insiders and condemned outsiders, repeated claims treated as self-validating, and resistance to evidence that threatens the group identity?
We must not answer one totalising label with another. We must expose the asymmetry. The BBC’s reach allowed its chosen interpretation to become socially perceived reality before the underlying evidence had been subjected to equal public examination.
In my open letter I called Catrin Nye “a product of your own life-destroying deception.” (Open letter: God Help Catrin Nye, Section 3, Paragraph 7) The deepest meaning is not name-calling. A false narrative changes the narrator too. To sustain it, more evidence must be ignored, more contradictions rationalised, and more of the target’s humanity pushed outside the frame. Eventually the person is not only deceiving an audience; they are living within the moral reality their own story requires.
Projection Does Not Remove Our Duty to Examine Ourselves
If this article becomes merely an explanation of what is wrong with “them,” it has failed.
Jesus Christ’s command to address the plank in our own eye before pointing out the speck in someone else’s eye is addressed to every one of us. Lighthouse cannot oppose projection by projecting all evil outward. We must test criticism, confess what is true, correct what is wrong, make restitution where required and refuse the psychological comfort of imagining that our enemies’ wrongdoing makes us righteous.
That is why the standard must remain universal:
- Evidence before identity.
- Conduct before labels.
- Context before condemnation.
- Proportionate accountability before destruction.
- The possibility of repentance for everyone.
My letter explicitly rejects threats, harassment and harm against Catrin Nye, Jamie Bartlett, their families and BBC staff. An Anti-Life-Destruction campaign cannot regenerate life by reproducing and promoting destruction. We do not answer dehumanisation by denying another person’s humanity.
“Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone.” — Romans 12:17
That does not mean silence. It means truthful confrontation without revenge. It means consequences ordered towards correction, restitution and the protection of life.
In the Final Analysis…
The accusation was that Lighthouse ruined lives.
Yet the BBC’s Life Destruction Campaign was a Life Destruction Campaign because it intended to destroy lives. This destruction was not with truth, but with near hundreds of manipulated perceptions and over 140 recognised, proven or materially evidenced falsehoods, deceptions, contextual manipulations and coercions. The BBC destroys lives on behalf of the Establishment, on behalf of their ruthless need for survival as well as their ruthless need to advance careers and so on and so forth.
Who constructed and globally broadcast an identity that followed us into our homes, relationships, livelihoods, health, legal circumstances and future possibilities? Who legitimised the Anti-Lighthouse Reddit cult? Who benefited professionally from the production? Who had the institutional power? Who has had the greater opportunity to answer? Who has repeatedly invited a full evidential encounter, and who has refused it?
These are not rhetorical substitutes for evidence. They are the questions the evidence must answer.
Projection survives by keeping attention fixed on the target. Truth breaks its hold by turning the whole scene towards the light: accuser, accused, journalist, source, institution, audience, and ourselves.
God sees through every reversal.
The door remains open to Catrin Nye, the BBC and all their sources.
Bring the claims. Bring the sources. Bring the evidence. Allow ours to be examined with equal seriousness. Let every lie be exposed, including any lie of ours. Let every genuine wrong be faced, including any wrong of ours. But let no one hide projection behind journalism, destruction behind public interest or personal choice behind the BBC. Let us break that vicious cycle, together once and for all.
God help us all to remove the plank, face the truth and stop placing our own darkness onto the lives of others.
God bless,

I appreciate a number of things that are tackled in this article. Firstly the matter of projection is a significant one. Whether it’s been obscenities on Reddit or false allegations in A Very British Cult, what’s common is the way that so much is projected.
Similarly I appreciate addressing the point of DARVO. This can easily be thrown back and forth till the cows come home. When I saw the likes of Alexandra Stein use it, almost immediately I thought “Hang on a minute! Isn’t that what you’re doing right now?!?”
So I am grateful that these distinctions are being extracted from the Open Letter to Catrin Nye.
I really appreciate the clarity here that these conversations risk descending into tit for tat or a “no you are” kind of mess, but to be able to sit down, talk it out and handle the evidence is paramount. That may well be messy, and the truth of the matter may come down to differing points of view, but it’s vital. When one side is engaged in a life destruction campaign however and don’t want to sit down, don’t want to have dialogue that they cannot control but they then point the finger at others, that is a strong case for projection. We see it so many times with smear campaigns, those lobbing accusations often display the very thing they’re calling out. It’s a slippery trap to think that wouldn’t apply to ourselves. Dialogue and compassion in Christ is the only solution.
This commentary, on the back of the Catrin Nye Letter, helps a lot to further understand the modus operandi of the BBC and how they are going about destroying the lives of people in line with their overall Establishment agenda.
Over time, they have become better and better at hiding their own wrongdoings by projecting faults onto others. Their strategies and tactics need to be brought into the light, and the public record needs to be corrected for those who have been unjustly attacked by the BBC, as the mouthpiece of the Establishment.
Because The BBC has the greater reach and loudest ‘shout’, most people will believe what they say without question. That is the trust of the public that The BBC relies upon. As soon as they frame a group as a ‘cult’ then there is little that group can do initially to reject that claim and defend their name.
In this way The BBC can and has, controlled and threatened. However, what Lighthouse is doing, is showing that the truth in God will come out and no matter the reach, the lies The BBC has told will come to the surface and they will be held to account.
This is a really powerful commentary on the case involving Catrin Nye, Jamie Bartlett and the BBC team. It also completely challenges many of the accusations that have been made against us and calls them out for what they are, whilst at the same time acknowledging that we are not ‘sinless’, but sinful and repentant sinners at that.
These are incredible insights into human beings, clearly coming from so much research and experience — not just in relation to our case, but through work with many others, including psychologists and others in related fields. It’s an incredibly powerful read, calling me and all of us to examine ourselves first before ‘pointing out the plank in our brother’s eye’.
God bless you and us all. Amen. 🙏
Thank you for hitting this home, the projections of the BBC onto Lighthouse would be laughable if they weren’t so destructive to life.
I value how you are bringing in the Open Letter to Catrin Nye into this article. Explaining why certain points have been made and why they needed to be made. I found this quite hard to follow, but I do appreciate what you are helping all of us to see and feel for ourselves and not just take what you are sharing, but to make up our own minds.
I value how you have brought in the scripture about seeing the plank of wood in our own eyes before the speck in others. This is a very powerful scripture, and Christ wants and needs us to look into our souls and see the sinful nature that is there in all of us.
I really appreciate what you are bringing to us in this series of articles on Catrin Nye. One, it is not just about her; this is about us as humanity. Something that we all need to look at inside.
Thank you so much Paul…
No reputation, status or public image should ever matter more than truth. Very pertinent and powerful point.
