“Test everything; hold fast what is good.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:21
The BBC labelled Lighthouse Global a cult.
It did not present “cult” as a careful hypothesis from carefully gathered and tested evidence. It used the word as an interpretive prison through which our work, relationships, beliefs, finances, suffering, resistance and journey to Christ could all be recast against us.
If we defended one another, that became cult-like loyalty. If we worked intensely, that became control. If we invested money, that became exploitation. If families disapproved, their disapproval became evidence. If we turned to Jesus Christ, that became a tactical rebrand. If we challenged the production, that became further evidence of danger.
Part Eight showed how the BBC constructed an editorial prison from which no answer was permitted to escape. Now, Part Nine asks the question behind that prison:
When would the BBC not have labelled us a cult?
What Was the BBC’s Test?
In A Very British Cult, the BBC assembled a collection of cult-like characteristics: started by a charismatic and authoritarian leader, a steeply hierarchical structure, isolating people from friends and family, “brainwashing”/coercive control and exploitation.
The programme then interpreted everything through the pre-determined conclusion using suitably general criteria that could easily be applied to any social group, from a family to a multinational corporation. The allegation established the lens; the lens converted every fact into confirmation of the pre-written conclusion.
If the BBC applied these characteristics consistently and impartially, as it claims to, it would have to start with itself. It would be so busy facing itself, and how closely its own conduct aligns with the characteristics it used to construct a cult, that it would have little time left to call anyone else one.
Similar or stronger characteristics are interpreted very differently when they appear inside wealthy corporations, politically and culturally protected ideological movements or religious denominations the Establishment does not want to confront.
That is the issue. Not whether every comparison is identical. The question is whether the BBC applies one evidential and moral standard, or whether it selects its standard according to the target.
Before examining each comparison in turn, the reality must be stated plainly:
The BBC would never have called Lighthouse Global “a cult” if we had already made billions, if we had been an LGBTQ+ community or if we had come to Islam instead of Christianity. There is absolutely no way.
What If Lighthouse Global Had Been an LGBTQ+ Community?
Imagine Lighthouse prescribed what citizens must affirm about identity and treated disagreement as hatred or creating an unsafe environment. Imagine that we made sure that worldview entered schools, corporations, the healthcare sector, universities and the BBC while children faced puberty blockers and irreversible bodily interventions. Imagine clinicians, parents, detransitioners and women raising safeguarding concerns were excluded.
Would the BBC have called that ideological control?
A BBC internal review warned of “unintended editorial bias” with regard to how gender ideologies were dealt with by the broadcaster. Significant voices were missing from debates, no reviewed example reflected detransitioners’ experiences that went against prevailing LGBTQ advice, safety concerns received “little or no coverage,” and leaked WPATH (World Professional Association for Transgender Health) documents of the damage caused to children went unreported altogether. The BBC’s Executive Complaints Unit also upheld a complaint that an article omitted legitimate reservations about puberty blockers and overused references to suicidal ideation used to pressure parents into affirming their child’s gender beliefs. To explain this point, pro-transgender medical professionals have made the case to parents that puberty blockers and surgery on their child would be required to prevent them from taking their own life. Where the BBC ought to have been critical of ideological control, it became its mouthpiece.
If Lighthouse had prescribed what citizens must affirm about reality, suppressed dissenting experiences and amplified ideologies, would Catrin Nye have described that as affirmation and inclusion, or as mind control, speech control and coercion?
Had we carried the right ‘protected’ ideological identity, perhaps the lens through which all these characteristics would have been framed would have been that of courageous warriors fighting for the rights of the oppressed.
The reality is that if we’d adopted and embraced an LGBTQ ideology, the mainstream media would’ve not only not attacked us, they would’ve staunchly protected us, backed, promoted and championed us. They would’ve funded us directly and/or opened up opportunities for massive funding through grants from government, private trusts and corporate entities.
If we had said that we were establishing purpose-built communities for LGBTQ individuals and groups as well as training people in leftist ideology on a global basis, then Lighthouse would be lauded as a global success story to be admired by all. We’ve seen how woke, far-left organisations have secured tonnes of (often illegal) funding and been celebrated by those in positions of influence across media, government and the public arena. If we’d taken this path, then Lighthouse’s global expansion would either have already happened or be well underway.
But we became Christian. We didn’t become post-modernist gender ideologues. So we were fair game for the BBC to target with its Life-Destruction tactics.
If We Had Come to Islam Instead of Christ
The contrast becomes even more severe with Islam.
Imagine Lighthouse claimed divine authority over dress, marriage, sexuality, inheritance, speech and the freedom to leave. Imagine its sources were historically interpreted to permit disciplinary violence in marriage and an authoritative tradition instructed: “Whoever changed his Islamic religion, then kill him.” Would the BBC have hesitated to call us a cult? No, right?
These are not inventions, but all parts of Islam that many don’t want to recognise, face and confront. The verse Surah 4:34 in the Qur’an has traditionally been read by many classical interpreters as permitting physical chastisement of a disobedient wife: “But those [wives] from whom you fear arrogance – [first] advise them; [then if they persist], forsake them in bed; and [finally], strike them.”
This doctrine has not remained sealed inside ancient books. The BBC has itself reported countless times on terrorism, acts of violence, ex-Muslims facing threats and intimidation. In wider polling, Pew found substantial support for executing apostates among Muslims favouring Sharia as state law in several countries.
Traditional Sharia law displays several of the very characteristics claimed to be present at Lighthouse: comprehensive behavioural regulation, doctrine placed above the individual, penalties for dissent and damaging consequences for leaving. Yet when did you last see Islam being called a cult by the BBC?
Our Christianity at Lighthouse or the work conducted at Lighthouse as an organisation, was not treated either as sincere belief or as worthy of respect and understanding, but instead as false advertising, as “sheep’s clothing around the wolf.”
Why is Islam granted special privileges and allowances for its cultic beliefs and behaviours? Special privileges and allowances that have been denied to Lighthouse when it comes to our Christian faith as well as our empirical research and secular work.
The Label Changes With the Target
We can now see the pattern.
When it suits the top-tier Establishment, the rules don’t need to apply. A two-tier system of judgment can be engaged that renders the Christian conservative entrepreneurs at Lighthouse a threat, and the gender ideologues and Islamists are let off without scrutiny, despite being more deserving.
When the target is considered an ideological and political enemy, like Lighthouse, the top-tier Establishment can flip the script however they like.
The BBC did not apply a stable definition of a cult. It applied a smear as a weapon.
Christ’s Standard Comes First
This does not release Lighthouse from examination. Jesus Christ, not the BBC, Lighthouse, Islam, LGBTQ+ activists or any cult specialist, is the governing authority.
Christ commands us to test fruit, reject false authority, expose darkness, protect freedom of conscience, repent of wrongdoing and refuse to make any human leader an idol. If Lighthouse has controlled, deceived, exploited or harmed anyone, truth requires that it be established, confronted and corrected.
But that same standard must be applied symmetrically. The BBC cannot demand exhaustive suspicion of Lighthouse while granting interpretive charity to ideologies it either favours or fears.
As I wrote in my open letter:
“Let us fight for truth together. Let us be humble, let us be open, let us be prepared to be wrong, let us be prepared to learn and let us be prepared to change. The sole winner here is truth.” — Open letter, Section 2, paragraph 4
That invitation remains open. Bring the BBC’s definition. Bring the alleged criteria. Bring the evidence. Then apply the same test to everybody.

In the Final Analysis…
Would the BBC have attacked us in the same way if our beliefs possessed Establishment approval? If our transformation had taken us into Islam rather than towards Jesus Christ? If one of us belonged to the top tier of the institution judging us?
The evidence strongly suggests that the word “cult” would have changed meaning, or disappeared altogether.
The BBC presented itself against me, Paul S. Waugh, and Lighthouse as fearless investigative journalism confronting dangerous power. But it did not select a powerful, protected target. It selected a repentant sinner and a Christian community it believed could be isolated, stripped of credibility and destroyed without proportionate consequence.
It miscalculated… GROSSLY!
If Catrin Nye and the BBC genuinely believed our Christianity was a farce, they know better now. We are still here. We are closer to Christ than ever and by His Spirit, opposing diabolical Life Destruction.
And we will continue asking the question the BBC’s entire production tried to prevent the public from asking:
Was Lighthouse labelled a cult because an equal standard proved it, or because the BBC believed we were the people it could safely label a cult and destroy?
God help every one of us to answer before the Truth.
God bless,
Paul S. Waugh

What do the BBC, Islam, and the LGBTQ+ movement have in common?
They all sanction and endorse the chronic abuse of children in many forms – including and very much, sexual abuse.
What is behind that? The diabolical life destruction that seeks to attack and murder the sacred image of God, most keenly and strongly found in children, least polluted and corrupted by this world.
It cannot be of surprise then, that the BBC, under Establishment orders, sought to destroy Lighthouse Global’s work; work that holds sacred the value and worth of a human being, made in the image of God – to realise our God-given potential, not least in our natural state of community.
This is crucial, thank you. The fact that Islam is not called a cult, despite displaying many of the characteristics that would indicate it as one, while the BBC supports it, is so contrary to what they have accused us of. It really is the pot calling the kettle black in some shape or form. It’s just ridiculous!
We pray for their repentance, and that every single person involved in this will ultimately come closer to Christ and/or be met with His love and saving grace.
God bless.
In Catrin Nye and the BBC’s warped logic, the more an ideological enemy writes about an issue, the more malevolent they are. There was whining about a 6,000-word email, but now it’s probably at least 3-4 times that when including the commentary. Yet there’s so much more that can be written and expanded because of the rooting in truth.
This question is one that Catrin Nye and the BBC can’t bear to face, let alone answer.
It’s very telling that if we’d not become Christian, but instead followed the BBC’s woke agenda, the standing and relationship with the BBC would’ve been very, very different! They would have seen our lack of reach and done what they could to help us solve that problem. Instead they saw the lack of reach as a reason to initiate life destruction with no expected comeback. How wrong they were!
By God’s grace, we have endured around 5 years of the BBC seeking to absolutely decimate us, to wipe us off the face of the earth into obscurity. They hate that we’re still here and shining the light brightly on their darkness for the world to see. Remember this is an organisation that has attracted many a paedophile and child abuser as shown on our BBC Paedophilia and Sexual Abuse Register.
This is a slam-dunk article. What you have shared above is powerful, and I say that because Lighthouse has only been called a cult because we have accepted Christ as our Lord and Saviour. The LGBTQ+ criticise anyone who does not stand for their belief; they believe they are right and that everyone else is wrong. And they call Lighthouse a cult!!!
The BBC supports gender change; you only have to watch children’s BBC to see that.
Thank you for sharing this article; I could say more, but not at this time.
God bless us all…
What standard did the BBC actually apply when it labelled Lighthouse a cult, and would that same standard have been applied if Lighthouse had followed an ideology more aligned with the Establishment?
I appreciate the recognition that Lighthouse itself must remain open to scrutiny. Christ, rather than any institution, movement or human authority, has to be the ultimate standard. Truth does not need protection from honest examination. It requires us to be humble, willing to be wrong, willing to repent and willing to change. These are character traits that the BBC is not interested in!
It is evident that when The BBC want to embellish the truth or remove the truth from their reporting entirely, they do so without any consideration to the people involved.
If the aims and ideology of Lighthouse aligned with The BBC, they would sign praise for Lighthouse from every rooftop, every day. However, Lighthouse stands for searching for the truth and holding ourselves to it, and truth is against the BBC’s life destruction agenda.
This article is so exposing to the underlying modus operandi behind the label. They are not applied without agenda, otherwise all the woke ideologies and certainly Islam would be shown to be far more threatening and damaging than anything they could smear Lighthouse with. After the documyth, the Guardian called us the worst of humanity… If that doesn’t reveal the ideological war at play here, I don’t know what does.
Brilliant article…the BBC reveals itself again as a dangerous cult and we can also see the characteristics of Islam which lean to this being a cult also.
Yet we made a decision to come to Christ and we have been labelled something we never have been and never will be!
Great article!! I believe a label should never become a substitute for evidence, and no institution should be allowed to decide who deserves to be examined and who deserves to be believed without applying the same standard to everyone.
