“But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.” — John 3:21
For almost four years to the day, I have repeatedly asked Catrin Nye and the BBC to sit down with us at Lighthouse.
The purpose is not to exchange slogans. It’s not to conduct another tightly controlled interview inside a conclusion already reached. I have asked for a full, fair and properly structured investigation into the claims, the sources, the primary records and the human consequences.
The invitation is straightforward:
Bring the strongest claims. Bring the sources who made them. Bring the evidence on which the BBC relied. Allow us to bring the documented record and full context. Establish fair conditions in which both sides can be questioned, and truth — not institutional prestige, public relations or personal victory — is the only winner.
Catrin Nye and the BBC have not accepted that invitation.
Catrin Nye now says she is scared of us. This is the latest of many ways in which direct accountability has been avoided. I am not asking her to fear me or Lighthouse; I am asking her to face the truth.
Whilst Catrin Nye now claims to be fearful of us, her conduct raises a very different question… Is it really Lighthouse she fears — or the truth that a fair examination of the complete record may reveal?
If Catrin Nye is unwilling to face us, then send Jamie Bartlett. He helped lead the production, pushed her forward as its public face and was central to constructing the deceptive narrative broadcast about Lighthouse. It is time for him to stand beside the work he helped create, answer the evidence and face its devastating human consequences. If the BBC remains outwardly confident in what it broadcast, why is no one from the BBC Goliath willing to face the Lighthouse David? Inwardly they are not confident at all…
Jamie Bartlett, who puts the mother of their children on the front line as the public face of a programme that carried deceptions to millions, then retreats into the shadows as the walls of truth close in? If you stood behind the programme, stand beside her now. Face us. Face the evidence. Face the consequences.

The continuing refusal to be part of an interview raises a question deeper than journalism:
Why Won’t You Sit Down and Face the Truth?
This is not a new request created for my open letter, “God Help You, Catrin Nye”. The letter records a long history of attempted engagement.
I asked Catrin directly:
“Catrin, before I go any further — and I know you are extremely tired of me asking hundreds of times — would you like to have this out live in your studio?”
— Open letter, Section 2, paragraph 2
The proposed encounter was not hidden or ambiguous. It was an invitation to test the BBC’s public claims against the physical evidence before the citizens whose licence fees helped fund the production.
I also wrote:
“Let us fight for truth together: two opponents in combat where the sole winner is truth.”
— Open letter, Section 2, paragraph 4
If the BBC’s account is sound, then a fair examination should strengthen it. In fact, in the BBC’s eyes there should be absolutely nothing to worry about. The BBC’s Ravin Sampat assured Shaun Cooper in writing on 21st March 2023 that the investigation behind A Very British Cult was “robust, accurate and fair” — an assurance he gave as the programme’s Executive Producer, no less.
Meanwhile, if our account is false, sustained questioning should expose it. If either side has misunderstood, exaggerated or acted wrongly, the evidence should reveal that too.
So why is a broadcaster that publicly identifies itself with truth unwilling to enter the most direct encounter with the disputed record?
What Is the Truth They Do Not Want To Face?
After years of disputed claims, severe human consequences, rejected evidence and repeated invitations, refusal has a definite effect: it keeps the BBC’s account protected from the fullest available test.
What they do not want to face is not truth in the abstract, but the truth of their systematic diabolical Life Destruction: how it was constructed, broadcast, protected and allowed to continue through the BBC’s institutional power.
The broadcaster’s narrative remains before the public with global reach, production values and institutional authority. The primary records challenging that narrative remain outside an equivalent public frame. The people whose lives were defined by the programme are left trying to correct a powerful public identity without proportionate access to the audience that received it.
That is why I wrote:
“The public record must reflect the reality of how communication, evidence, and dialogue have been actively and aggressively blocked by the BBC and your team.”
— Open letter, Section 3, paragraph 6
The BBC cannot reasonably present its version to millions, constrain the target’s capacity to answer and then treat the resulting public impression as independent confirmation that its original framing was correct. That is not an open search for truth. It is a closed narrative loop.
What Was Actually Offered
The invitation was not a vague request for another conversation. I proposed a public test built around the strongest disputed claims. In my open letter, I state:
“I will bring my concrete evidence on the 5-10 biggest lies you have broadcast to your forced licence-fee payers and their families.”
— Open letter, Section 2, paragraph 3
I then draw the distinction between the competing positions:
“You, Catrin, are with growing desperation upholding your narrative of life-destruction of the people and the families and our children of Lighthouse Partners and Associates; I hold the physical facts. Why not attempt to put me and our anti-life-destruction intervention campaign to bed once and for all?”
— Open letter, Section 2, paragraph 4
These are my allegations and my proposed test; they do not establish the result in advance. Their significance is that they make the invitation falsifiable. Catrin Nye and the BBC could identify the five to ten strongest claims, disclose the material relied upon and test it against the records I hold.
A fair examination could vindicate the BBC, vindicate Lighthouse Global, expose errors on both sides or establish that some matters remain genuinely disputed. What it would remove is the protection created when one side controls the original broadcast and the conditions under which the target may answer.
The Repeating Pattern
This problem does not begin or end with Catrin Nye and the BBC.
Before the documentary, I repeatedly invited families raising accusations and concerns to come to my home and speak directly. They could bring their questions, grievances and evidence. They could meet me without a journalist, anonymous forum or hostile intermediary controlling the exchange. Those who later became central to the public campaign did not accept.
That matters because my conduct with other families was different. When families genuinely agreed to engage, I travelled internationally — including to Kenya, Venice and South Africa — to listen, work through conflict and seek reconciliation. Some entered the room and accepted the risks of reciprocal truth. Those at the centre of the hostile public narrative would not.
The same pattern appears among the BBC’s sources, anti-Lighthouse Reddit contributors and Alexandra Stein, presented as a cult specialist. They were willing to make or support grave claims through documentaries, podcasts, articles, posts and controlled interviews. When invited to meet the people accused, inspect the records and submit their conclusions to reciprocal scrutiny, they did not come.
For the David vs Goliath Showdown on 23 April 2024, fifty-two invitations were issued to people involved in the public campaign, including BBC participants, programme sources and others who had promoted serious allegations. The proposed forum was live and unedited, with both sides able to present accusations, context, evidence and responses. None accepted.
Lead Daily Mail source Richard Thomas and lead BBC source Jeffrey Leigh-Jones were among those invited. Both had public platforms. What they declined was the platform on which Lighthouse would have an equal opportunity to answer.
I cannot claim supernatural access to every person’s private thoughts. Their motives must be distinguished from their conduct. But the conduct creates a legitimate public question: why preserve every platform where the allegation controls the frame while refusing the encounter where the accused can answer fully?
What a Fair Encounter Would Require
A meaningful meeting would not require the BBC to concede our case in advance. It would not require Catrin Nye to abandon every source. Nor would it require Lighthouse to surrender its conclusions to create a superficial peace.
It would require everyone to:
- define the strongest disputed claims;
- identify the evidence supporting each claim;
- distinguish testimony from independent corroboration;
- restore omitted context;
- test the BBC’s material against Lighthouse’s primary records;
- identify what is established, what remains disputed and what must be corrected;
- examine the human consequences and agree a proportionate route towards repair.
That is not surrender. It is serious truth-seeking.
My open letter makes clear that this invitation did not appear suddenly after publication:
“It’s not the first time I’m suggesting to you, Catrin, to have this out publicly, only to be faced with a wall of weaponised silence by you and the BBC. What happened to your Charter to have public debate? Bring your false sources and Lighthouse accusers in.”
— Open letter, Section 2, paragraph 3
The reality is that the BBC’s sources and critics have not lacked opportunities to speak. Their claims have travelled through national broadcasting, podcasts, articles and online campaigns. What remains absent is the encounter in which those claims can be answered through the complete contemporaneous record under reciprocal conditions. The BBC is focused on optics, on how they are perceived and so they treat the truth as dispensable, especially when it doesn’t suit them.
That is the specific problem I am establishing in this commentary. The character required to bear painful truth, Lighthouse’s own repentance and my final pastoral concern for Catrin belong to later pieces in this commentary series.
The Door Is Still Open
My letter states:
“It is a problem that can be solved, but it requires you and your institution to stop running away from the evidence of your life destruction. To cease your tactical deflections, avoiding consequences for your immense wrongdoing and to finally sit down to talk.”
— Open letter, Section 3, paragraph 5
Our continuing campaign is not an alternative to dialogue. It exists because dialogue has been refused.
As I wrote:
“This continuum of anti-life-destruction correspondence will expand week over week until you sit down with us to address the facts.”
— Open letter, Section 8, paragraph 7
And my letter closes with a continuing offer:
“The door remains open for a mature, calm resolution to end this life destruction. We await your response to arrange a time to sit down and talk.”
— Open letter, Section 8, paragraph 8
Catrin Nye, Jamie Bartlett, the production team and BBC leadership: bring the claims, sources and evidence. Let us bring ours. Let an independent and properly structured process reveal every falsehood, including any of ours, and identify every genuine wrong, including any of ours.
The public accusation has already been made. The lives affected have already carried its consequences. The decisive evidence should no longer be kept outside the encounter.
So the question remains:
Catrin Nye, Jamie Bartlett and the BBC, why won’t you sit down?
God bless,
Paul S. Waugh

“Robust”, “accurate” and “fair”… that’s what an investigation behind a programme broadcasting 140+ provable breaches of the Ofcom Code produced!
Ravin Sampat is eating his own words whilst Natalie Truswell, Catrin Nye and Jamie Bartlett are nowhere to be seen.
This is a journalistic matter, this isn’t personal. Surely these BBC staff are so trusting in their sources, processes and discernment?!?
The more this matter drags on, the more embarrassing this gets for the BBC that’s driven by the BBC Savile Syndrome…
I really value the clarity of the invitation: the BBC must bring their strongest claims, their sources and their evidence together and allow them to be challenged. This has always been what we have wanted and what I also appreciate is that rigorous challenging ought to reveal if Lighthouse’s position is wrong. We are repentant people and we stand for truth and we hold ourselves to this standard first. This is a mature, meaningful and fair process ought to look like.
If the BBC state that under the Editorial Guidelines, their journalism explicitly seeks to “establish the truth” to ensure all output is factual and accurate, then they must live by this..but the reality is, they have shown us that they don’t, not only by the way they have treated us but also have shown us they don’t conduct themselves by their declaration, in many, many, many other instances with other organisations and individuals.
What there should be, perhaps even in law, is a structured approach to program making to ensure that all parties have their say, have their point of view represented, in full and fair context. This is what The BBC will claim they already do with their charter, but it is not executed properly or fairly.
What does happen is The BBC confuse producing dramas like EastEnders, with producing documentaries. Drama’s are pre-scripted, with characters already defined and a story already agreed. That is how they are making now documentaries, by altering crucial context and facts, to suit their pre-determined agenda and story.
This is why they are afraid to talk, because their pre-determined story doesn’t match the facts and reality.
The BBC have twisted themselves into so many lies, and they are not willing or capable of facing up to the truth and making wrongs right. Whether it’s Catrin Nye, her partner Jamie Bartlett, or other members of the production team from A Very British Cult, they try to keep up the façade that they created a fair and comprehensive documentary, which is provably wrong, with more than 140 lies. It’s time to correct the public record and hold them accountable. The BBC have caused so much suffering over the decades for innocent people, including forcing old ladies to pay their licence fee and threatening them.
I value how you have days that if Ms Nye is scared of Lighthouse, let Mr Bartlett take her place. What does get me, a journalist reports on so much, having a list of people who must hate them, yet she is scared of a small group of Christian’s!!!
The problem for them is that if they meet up with you, they will be exposed for the frauds they are because their lies will be proven as lies.
I pray for all involved in A Very British Cult…
Over and over again, the offer to sit down and talk has been offered and either rejected or avoided by the BBC. Publicly and privately. Why? World leaders meet with enemies and allies alike all the time. Why? Why go to such lengths to avoid a conversation in any descriptive capacity? It has been one of the most puzzling, heartbreaking and maddening aspects of this whole process. As Charlie Kirk said, when you stop having conversations, that is when bad things happen. And Paul, you have restlessly tried to have those conversations. God bless you and keep going.
This is another really special piece and commentary on Catrin Nye’s letter from Paul. The fact that Paul had previously invited family members to speak openly about any issues they had, as an opportunity to reconcile, as well as travelling to meet with family members of other Lighthouse clients to answer their questions and discuss their concerns, speaks volumes about the kind of man Paul is.
Yet none of this was included in the documentary. I think this is another really crucial piece of commentary that completely challenges the narrative that has been presented about Lighthouse and Paul Waugh, and highlights the significant context that was left out and/or completely twisted for the BBC and Catrin Nye’s own agenda.
Thank you.
Stellar article. Thank you, amazing insights here and dedication across the board with the amount of article is brilliant, it show a real dedication to this work. God bless you
