“Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but whoever takes crooked paths will be found out.” — Proverbs 10:9
There is a deeper problem at the BBC than the control of interviews, editing, right-of-reply procedures or public presentation. Those things matter, but they are manifestations of something more human and more serious: the preference for appearing righteous over facing the truth of who we are.
This is why the issue of optics cannot be confined to examining only the mechanics of A Very British Cult. The BBC did not merely control how Lighthouse appeared. It operates within a culture that attracts, employs and rewards people who understand how to maintain the right image- professional, compassionate, courageous and truth-seeking- while resisting the painful inward examination that genuine truth requires.
In A Very British Cult, Catrin Nye asks in relation to life-coaching:
“Also am I going to have to tell them, like, my deepest, darkest secrets?”
That sentence reveals the very anxiety at the centre of this dispute: what happens when the examiner becomes the examined? What happens when the journalist who asks others to expose their lives, failures, motives and private histories must face the deepest and darkest truth about themselves?
What are those secrets, Catrin? You seem obsessive about finding out or making up what other people’s secrets are; why don’t you tell us yours? Or is that why you became a journalist, so you could create a facade of self whereby you don’t think you need to look inside yourself while everyone thinks you are a good person because you are supposedly exposing everyone else’s badness? The media and the BBC in particular are full of this pathology. We call it the BBC Savile Syndrome. In other words, public darling, inner deceiver.

👉Lighthouse Special Announcement: A Statement by Paul S. Waugh on Why Lighthouse Global Was Attacked by The Establishment
Optics Begin Where Self-Examination Ends
Character is revealed by how much truth and reality we are willing to seek, withstand and transform through our dedication to it. The decisive test is not whether truth suits our predetermined idea of ourselves. It is whether we remain committed to it when it embarrasses us, humiliates us, threatens our career or dismantles the identity we have carefully presented to the world.
A person ruled by optics asks: How do I appear? A person committed to truth asks: What is true, and what must change in me because of it?
That distinction helps explain a pattern we have repeatedly encountered among those who have attacked Lighthouse. People have been more than willing to “investigate” us, diagnose us, condemn us and expose what they claim lies beneath our outward appearance. Yet when asked to enter an open, reciprocal process, where their allegations, motives, contradictions and conduct can also be examined, the appetite for scrutiny disappears.
This does not prove that every criticism of Lighthouse is false. Nor does it exempt me, Paul S. Waugh, or anyone at Lighthouse from searching examination. Quite the opposite. It identifies a standard that must govern everyone equally. No journalist, source, institution or accused organisation should be able to demand exposure for others while protecting a preferred identity from the same light.
Jesus warned against this asymmetry:
“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?” — Matthew 7:3
The problem is not scrutiny. The problem is scrutiny travelling in only one direction.
A Culture That Rewards Appearance
The BBC presents itself as an institution of public service, courageous investigation and impartial truth. That identity depends not only upon policies but upon people who can perform it convincingly. Presenters must appear compassionate and likeable. Correspondence must sound measured. Investigations must carry the outward signs of rigour. Executives must appear responsible when complaints arise.
But optics should be only the natural result of genuine work being done.
When appearance becomes the primary objective, the order is reversed. The institution no longer asks whether it is truthful and therefore appears trustworthy. It asks how to preserve the appearance of trustworthiness when the truth threatens it.
This is the BBC in a nutshell.
That culture inevitably selects and rewards people skilled in presentation. They know how to sound concerned without surrendering control, how to invite a response without permitting it to alter the governing narrative, and how to appear open while keeping every decisive mechanism- questions, timetable, editing, framing and final word- in institutional hands.
This is not merely public relations. It becomes a system of character avoidance. The institution protects the professional identity of its personnel, while those personnel protect the moral identity of the institution. Each gives the other somewhere to hide.
A Very British Cult as a Manifestation
The BBC spent approximately eighteen months developing A Very British Cult.
Why and How The BBC Attacked Lighthouse Global With Their Hit Piece ‘A Very British Cult’ Click the + to expand and read the full explanation.
Paul S. Waugh and Lighthouse Global – A provably observable threat to the top-tier Establishment and its totalitarian agenda.
The top-tier Establishment has induced a conspiratorial value limitation of the masses in all areas theochristologically, humanly, materially and financially.
Lighthouse Global, by stark contrast, is dedicated to developing purpose-built communities founded on truth, notably the truth of Christ.
This is why the top-tier Establishment tried to shut us down. These communities are and will be strategic, highly intelligent, highly coordinated, disciplined, loving, focused and resourceful — starting with the ultimate resource of God, with the direct intention of realising our God-given potential without hindrance.
You can imagine what a seismic threat that is to the top-tier Establishment, who have spent centuries perfecting its dark arts to control and suppress the masses.
They cannot diabolically control communities such as these, nor the individuals in Christ who are in them.
Therefore, they attacked us with the cult* smear to make the British and global population terrified of unifying with others in community. This is because the Establishment itself is actually terrified of the bottom tier masses forming community groups that enable the realisation of their God-given potential. They are terrified of the masses no longer being able to remain under the cruel control of the Establishment.
The individuals who have been used by the Establishment mouthpieces, like Jeffrey Epstein etc. are now provably a cover for what’s behind their real objectives: to destroy both conservative and Christian communities and community-builders like Paul S. Waugh.
Paul was and is building purpose-built communities in opposition to the Establishment’s totalitarian agenda at a global industrial scale.
They had to try and stop him at all costs.
They failed.
Enter the BBC hit-piece on Lighthouse…
When the BBC tried to destroy Lighthouse, it deliberately presented the views of a handful of people who had clear vested interests, longstanding grievances and/or previous conflicts with us.
These were conflicts based on:
- a handful of ex-clients trying to leverage a totally undue refund
- ex-client parents trying to cover up sexual abuse of their children
- jealous, coercively controlling partners
- and embarrassingly unrequited love interests
They created a pseudo-documentary about Lighthouse Global called “A Very British Cult”. This was a case of toxic framing at a much higher and more sinister level. They targeted a healthy, supportive, purpose-built research community. A community that has pioneered insights into human development in all areas of life and business. This research is beyond compelling — it is evidential.
On one hand, five hours of one-sided fabricated and malicious allegations were given airtime.
On the other hand, on multiple occasions (both months before and after broadcast), Lighthouse was denied a fair and equivalent opportunity to present the evidence that fully vindicated us in response.
The BBC have even stated on record in their programme that they chose not to receive our evidence that would totally and categorically debunk their malicious sources’ claims.
The result was that viewers were handed a one-sided diabolical work of fiction, even though contrary evidence was readily available, offered to and rejected by the BBC.
NB: We had made it very clear to the BBC that they were making a programme without even viewing our evidence. A mere eight working days before broadcast, the BBC reluctantly offered to see our evidence, even though they were committed to their programme and would not guarantee using or publishing our evidence.
Because of their nefarious intentions, we elected not to supply our evidence because we did not trust the BBC to not abuse our evidence, which they have done in so many other instances. We stated as much to them directly via email before broadcast.
That is not honest journalism. That is not the full factual record. It is the same dangerous pattern: fan the flames of malicious allegations. Silence the targets of the top-tier Establishment. Present it as investigative journalism.
The BBC’s modus operandi is to scour the dark recesses of the internet, to use supposedly credible people (i.e. anyone without a criminal record) who have vendettas against Establishment targets. They present those people’s lies and opinions as facts to the viewing and listening public.
This applies to anyone and everyone the BBC has maliciously attacked.
This would truly be impartial, unbiased and unprejudiced reporting — everything the BBC is provably not right now, while deceptively claiming so.
As a result of the attacks on Lighthouse, we are legally, lawfully, peacefully fighting for the full and comprehensive right to reply to all falsehoods, with the same time (five hours of broadcast), money (at least tens of millions of pounds) and effort granted to our false accusers for the purposes of their smear campaign.
Why did the Establishment spend millions?
Not to destroy this tiny micro entity called Lighthouse.
They spent millions of pounds to destroy the credibility of the people (us at Lighthouse) behind their real destructive objectives to obliterate the most groundbreaking human potential research ever.
They spent millions of pounds to prevent being exposed.
They spent millions of pounds and years of effort using huge multi-agency teams.
They spent millions of pounds and put hundreds of people to work at huge risk to their reputation, credibility and existence.
Why?
To do their absolute damnedest to destroy this Christian initiative of global purpose-directed community builders.
No… they were not using all these resources over the last five years to destroy a little micro “cult”.
They were out to destroy our work because it threatened their very existence.
It threatened their power, position, their totalitarian-control agenda and their stranglehold on all resources and wealth.
Most of the associates at Lighthouse have had little idea of the extent, breadth and depth of our research programme. It had to be kept largely, almost extensively, under the radar.
The Last Days: A Critical To-Do List
There is an entire series of books coming out on this and our proposals on what to do about it moving forward in Christ entitled:
“The Last Days: A Critical To-Do List: 22 years of Groundbreaking Research – Warning: Christian Interventions Needed Soon, Lest It Be Too Late”.
There will soon be a comprehensive write-up (ongoing) on this series starting in the next few weeks. The time is now.
No matter how much they endeavour to destroy Paul S. Waugh with their lies — or even the truth (which would be an extreme change) — it does not and will not change the truth about the systemic strategies they use to drastically limit the masses, A.K.A. the non-elites.
We are beginning to see that they are starting to get this.
They still have a way to go but they are getting there.
To attempt to ruin Paul S. Waugh, Lighthouse Global and its Associates or not, is to ruin themselves. The Establishment simply, by God’s own laws and principles, cannot TALK themselves out of what they have collectively ACTED themselves into!
In the final analysis – when an Establishment organisation like the BBC needs to destroy someone or a group that are doing the right thing (especially for the Glory of God) against their overlord and elites’ ruinous agenda, they need to find a fabricated and contrived reason in the so-called public interest to do so.
They did this with “A Very British Cult”.
THEN THEY GOT ESTABLISHMENT AGENCIES AND CO-CONSPIRATORS TO GRANT IT FALSE CREDIBILITY.
This ultimately all comes with two ruinous things for them:
1. A terrible price in the medium and long term.
2. A short timeline.
It’s going to happen now, sooner rather than later. It comes, unfortunately for them, now with very limited time. That time is now almost up. The time is now.
For the full background, please visit this page.
An Important Note on the Term “Cult”
The Establishment have begun literally removing words from the dictionary and, through propaganda and indoctrination, have literally changed the meaning of words in mass public perception. They have, for example, demonised the word “cult” through mainstream media outlets, which they own and control.
Originally, this word is rooted in the word “culture”. There are many “cult” songs, “cult” films, actors and musicians that are revered. Cults themselves are not inherently bad. But there are clearly, provably bad cults.
By demonising this word, the top-tier Establishment have weaponised this to target anyone they consider an ideological or otherwise enemy. This is to the extent where Christian communities, especially, and Christians themselves are being viewed and treated as a dangerous cult itself.
The risk and danger of declaring one’s faith in Christ is about to become far worse, through the demonisation of such words in our society today.
Yet long before broadcast, Lighthouse Associates approached the BBC and offered cooperation and evidence. James Mills contacted BBC journalist Mike Cowan. We also approached producer Natalie Truswell. Cowan did not reply. Truswell responded that it was “not BBC practice to respond to enquiries of this kind.”
That neutral-sounding language protected the optics of professionalism while preventing the early engagement that would have completely changed the investigation. It would have devastated their malicious act of life destruction.
Had current and longstanding Lighthouse Associates been properly included, hostile claims could have been tested against contemporaneous recordings, messages and witnesses before the production.
Instead, Lighthouse was eventually offered a controlled and highly editable presence within a production whose title, identity and direction had already been established.
My open letter describes the result:
“This illusion of access was paired with a new scenario, a manufactured narrative context designed to look balanced while stripping us of any structural ability to defend our work and our lives.” — Open letter, Section 5, paragraph 4
That is optical control. But the deeper question is why such control is needed. If the investigators are secure in truth, why must they retain unilateral control of the encounter? Why can the evidence not be examined openly, reciprocally and independently? Why can the people who created the public accusation not stand beside their work and answer for it under conditions they do not control?
The Examiner Who Will Not Be Examined
Nye’s question about having to reveal her “deepest, darkest secrets” matters because A Very British Cult demanded other people to do precisely that. Private lives, family conflicts, vulnerabilities, failures and disputed memories were exploited as broadcast fodder. Lighthouse and I were not merely criticised; a false identity was constructed to destroy our lives and distributed to millions.
Yet the moral authority of that construction depended upon the audience never looking as deeply at the sources and the journalists constructing it.
The journalist remained in the position of the investigator, not a participant whose assumptions and conduct ought to be investigated. Sources remained victims or whistleblowers, not people who are capable of lying whose claims, conflicts and possible motives required equivalent scrutiny. The BBC remained the guardian of truth, not an institution capable of error, self-protection and Life Destruction.
This is how optics cover up perverted character. A predetermined public role prevents the audience from asking what may lie behind it. The badge of journalist, victim, expert or public institution becomes the face of the devil parading as an angel of light.
The Truth That Is Christ Is The Ultimate Judge Of Us All
I am calling out the BBC for constructing an angel-of-light façade, so what is different about me and us at Lighthouse? Lighthouse was founded in searching our own souls. We spent two decades searching for the answers as to why we struggled so much to overcome the barriers, obstacles and restraining forces to realising our God-given potential. When the online attacks began in 2021, we had almost no online presence. Why? Because we were working on who we were becoming, both individually and as an organisation, rather than trying to create a public face. We are sinners. We are imperfect. I have been angry, forceful and wrong at times. I and we take full responsibility for ourselves and repent daily to Christ.
Christianity is not reputation management.
Christian repentance begins with recognising that sin is not wrong only when somebody else discovers it or can demonstrate measurable harm. Sin is first a violation of God’s holiness, a rejection of His rightful authority and a dishonouring of the One in whose image we were created. David understood this when he confessed:
“Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight.” — Psalm 51:4
That did not mean David had harmed nobody else. His sin had devastated other lives. It meant that beneath every human wrong lay the deepest wrong: he had sinned against God.
This is where the Christian standard differs radically from a merely secular one. Without God, hidden darkness can be treated as morally inconsequential so long as nobody else sees it and no outward injury can be proved. Christianity permits no such refuge. God sees the hidden motive, the concealed resentment, the secret deception and the inward corruption behind a carefully maintained public identity. Even where the world sees professionalism, compassion or righteousness, God sees whether we are honouring Him or using appearances to conceal rebellion against Him.
Repentance therefore begins when we realise truthfully where we are before God, where we are not, and how far we have departed from what He created and commanded us to be. It is not shame for failing to preserve an image. Nor is it a vague admission that nobody is perfect. It is the honest naming of sin, grief at having violated and dishonoured God, confession without self-protection, and a decisive turning back to Him through Jesus Christ.
That is why exposure can become an act of mercy. God brings darkness into the light not merely to humiliate or condemn us, but to call us to repentance, forgiveness, restoration and reconciliation with Himself and with those we have wronged. The person committed to optics asks how the darkness can remain hidden. The Christian must ask what that darkness reveals, how it has dishonoured God, whom it has harmed, and what faithful repentance now requires.
Repentance is not looking repentant. A vague admission that “nobody is perfect” can become another optical defence, papering over the reality of what we have done, whom we have hurt and what must be repaired.
A genuine deep dive therefore requires a culture of repentance, atonement and forgiveness. A process that the vulnerable need to be offered compassion and understanding, not judgement. We must be able to bear the pain of the truth about ourselves without fleeing into denial or collapsing into despair. Christ does not call us to protect an image of righteousness. He calls us into the light so that our sin can be confessed, forgiven and transformed.
“If we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another.” — 1 John 1:7
This is the alternative to optical culture: not perfection, but truthful repentance; not role-playing, but changed conduct; not institutional self-protection, but repair.
The Question Before the BBC
The central question is no longer whether the BBC knows how to manage appearances. It plainly does. It can produce communications that have the appearance of being right, procedural explanations that sound reasonable and public language carefully crafted to protect its reputation. But the proper appearance of something does not prove the integrity of what lies behind it. What lies behind the BBC’s polished institutional face is deeply rotten.
How do we know? Because genuine responsibility produces compassion, confession, accountability, correction, reparation and lasting change. The BBC repeatedly performs responsibility without truly taking responsibility. That is why its gravest problems are never finally resolved. They recur beneath new statements, reviews and assurances—including the appalling pattern of sexual abuse, paedophilia, concealment and institutional protection, like in the case of Jimmy Savile. An institution that continually manages the appearance of accountability while failing to uproot the evil within it is not confronting its culture. It is preserving it.
The question is whether the BBC employs and promotes people willing to face reality when reality threatens who they believe themselves to be.
Will Catrin Nye, Jamie Bartlett, the production team and BBC leadership enter a process in which they do not control every question, edit and conclusion? Will they permit their sources’ strongest claims to be tested against Lighthouse’s complete records? Will they name what was wrong if the evidence establishes wrongdoing? Will they correct the public record with reach proportionate to the original broadcast? Will they repair where Life Destruction can be evidenced?
We at Lighthouse submit ourselves to the same test.
That is the dividing line between superficial optics and truth. Optics preserve the image of the person and institution they want the world to see. Truth reveals who we actually are and gives us the opportunity, through repentance, responsibility and Christ, to become different.
Catrin’s question was whether she would have to tell people her deepest, darkest secrets. The answer for every one of us is that truth eventually reaches the places we work hardest to conceal. The only real choice is whether we enter that light willingly and repentantly, or spend our lives hiding and controlling the optics while darkness consumes the person behind them.
God bless,

Wow, what an article. Thank you so much Paul, this is very revealing as to where the BBC is not. They claim to verify the facts, hence them creating BBC Verify. Yet when approached by you and Lighthouse to verify the facts, they rejected it. They have proved this many times, as you have helped us see, yet still, they only listen to one side. In a court of law the judge has to listen to both sides before making judgment, surely that ought to be standard outside a court as well, especially for reporters.
I value hour you shared Matthew 7:3 because as I read the title, that scripture came to mind because my experience of journalist is they are quick to see faults in others, but never look to see it in themselves…
I found it astounding that there could be such blatant lies in A Very British Cult, like when Catrin Nye and her BBC team ‘broke cover’! This was almost a year after I had asked Mike Cowan at the BBC to investigate us at Lighthouse as a form of response to a tabloid hit piece being produced by the Daily Mail.
I asked what sort of person could lie so blatantly about basic facts. Then I got to learn about the pathology of someone like Catrin Nye, who seeks fame and glory over truth and facts. This article goes a long way to explain the pathology of someone who refuses to look inside…
I’ve lost count of the number of times the external appearance of a thing or person has come crashing down as the reality that was meant to be kept hidden has come to light. Look at Jimmy Saville. Jim Will Fix It hero, unveiled to be one of the most predatory abusers in British history. If there were most emphasis given on integrity and proven character and repentance, then appearance would never have a foothold.
The way journalists like Catrin Nye approach scrutiny is often very one sided, particularly when the focus is on examining others while avoiding the same level of examination of themselves and their own work. Genuine journalism should involve a full commitment to facts and truth, even when those facts are uncomfortable or challenge the narrative that has already been established.
It is easy to hide behind the perceived trust and authority of an organisation like the BBC, especially when that reputation has been built up over many years. But institutional reputation cannot be a substitute for evidence and accountability.
That is why public accountability and correcting the public record are so important and to be committed to the absolute Truth that is Christ. God bless.
This is such an incredible commentary that gets right to the root of what lies behind the pathology in Catrin Nye and so many others: running from the truth when it is difficult and painful to face.
I really appreciated the comment at the end that it is only in Christ that we can truly change. We are so deeply corrupt and sinful by nature that it is only through Christ that we can be saved and transformed.
Thank you for getting to the heart of the problem within humanity and plainly stating it as it is. We pray for Catrin Nye’s repentance, as well as that of Jamie Bartlett and the whole BBC production team. May God bless us all. x x
The truth will always come out.
Either now by choice, through repentance and contrition, or in front of The Lord our God. Either way, there is no hiding from the truth and so to do so, only prolongs and deepens the eventual pain falsehoods bring.
I really love this commentary because it goes beneath the surface of optics and gets to the heart of what genuine integrity actually requires. What really grips me is the distinction between asking, ‘How do I appear?’ and asking, ‘What is true, and what must change in me because of it?’ That is such a powerful challenge, especially when we are willing to examine other people but become uncomfortable when the same light is turned towards ourselves.
such a good distinctions here. Thank you
“The question is whether the BBC employs and promotes people willing to face reality when reality threatens who they believe themselves to be.”
The BBC’s track record in relation to this question, has been disastrous but we will continue to pray that they repent 🙏
