Despite Paul’s longstanding ill health resulting from the multiple attacks on him, this article draws together the wisdom Paul has shared with the Lighthouse team through previous calls and teachings. We are bringing this message together on Paul’s behalf as he rests, recovers, and strengthens in our Lord.
“Keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behaviour in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.” — 1 Peter 3:16
We possess unique, God-given human endowments that distinguish us from animals and enable us not merely to exist, but to grow, build, love and thrive as human beings.
At Lighthouse Global, we have invested more than 21 years in discovering what it practically means to nurture and develop these endowments. This work has always been directed towards overcoming the barriers that prevent human beings from realising their God-given potential.
Previously, we have shared how self-awareness is fundamental to what makes us human.
We now turn to the next uniquely human endowment: conscience.
Paul S. Waugh has researched, taught and spoken extensively about conscience—not as a shallow notion of simply knowing the difference between right and wrong, but as a profound spiritual and ethical endowment central to every area of human life.
Here is a selection of how Paul has defined and explained conscience:
- 4th November 2020 — Conscience as a distinctively human endowment “Conscience is the distinctively human endowment—not the brain’s property but the person’s, linking our spirit to practical, everyday decisions.”
- 2nd May 2021 — Conscience as an inner parent “Conscience is the inner parent—the mature, loving authority within that can guide and correct us better than fear, shame, or external control.”
- 22nd July 2021 — Conscience as the origin of genuine care “Conscience is the root of genuine altruism and care—the part of us that makes sustained, self-giving love possible rather than just image-management.”
- 15th April 2021 — Conscience as the leader of leaders “Conscience is the leader of leaders—the deepest authority in a person that should lead even our intelligence, talents, and emotions.”
- 28th April 2021 — Conscience as the ignition for humanity “Conscience is the ignition for humanity—the inner engine that starts genuine love, responsibility, and transformation in a human life.”
- 10th April 2021 — Conscience as the motivator to live what is right “Conscience is the choice-maker and ‘game starter’—the faculty that doesn’t just tell us right and wrong, but moves us to live it.”
Taken together, these insights reveal conscience as the inner spiritual and ethical “captain” of a human being. It is the God-given endowment through which we sense truth and love, examine our motives, confront our wrongdoing and choose what is genuinely right—not merely what is fashionable, convenient or socially acceptable.
The bottom line is simple: we cannot optimise our lives without a healthy, functioning conscience.
Conscience is not an inconvenience to be ignored when it challenges us. It is not an obstacle to be silenced when it exposes uncomfortable truth. It must be nurtured, educated and aligned with what is true and loving.
History shows the catastrophic consequences when conscience is despised, corrupted or severed from truth. When human beings are trained to suppress that inner moral authority, acts once recognised as unthinkable can become accepted, justified and eventually institutionalised.
Hitler’s hatred of conscience was explicit: “Conscience is a Jewish invention. It is a blemish like circumcision.” The point is not to make a loose historical comparison. It is to recognise an enduring moral principle: when conscience is treated as the enemy, evil is given room to operate.
The suppression of conscience has not been left behind in history. It remains central to the modern Establishment’s efforts to control citizens by normalising, promoting or concealing unconscionable actions, including:
- The fight to kill babies in the womb, but not to fight Muslim rape gangs.
- The great education scam that fails to prepare young people for the future.
- The quiet shift towards a totalitarian, state-controlled justice system.
- The promotion of assisted-dying legislation.
What has come through our research at Lighthouse is an awareness of just how central conscience is to every area of human growth, love, responsibility and freedom. We have hundreds—if not thousands—of pages exploring what conscience is, why it must be nurtured and what happens when it is neglected, suppressed or corrupted.
The BBC had access to a great deal of this research. Yet rather than help educate citizens about conscience and their God-given human potential, it chose to amplify slanderous stories from a handful of fake whistleblowers. It elevated a perverted projection of “public interest”—one that feeds the appetite of bloodthirsty masses—above the actual public good.
That choice was not morally neutral. It reflected the very suppression of conscience that this work exposes: truth was displaced by sensation, evidence by narrative and public education by propaganda.
The fully evidenced reality is that the Establishment seeks power, position, control and wealth at the expense of us citizens. A morally awake, responsible and empowered citizenship—connected to conscience, capable of examining evidence and willing to act upon truth—is a profound threat to any system that depends upon weakness, fear and dependency.
That is why the Establishment attacks those who help human beings rediscover and develop their God-given potential. It cannot comfortably control citizens whose consciences are alive, whose minds are discerning and whose lives are increasingly governed by truth, love and responsibility.

The work we have been and are doing here, as demonstrated by the consistent and very enlivening realisations and lessons about our human endowments, specifically our conscience, is precious and vital for humanity. We are not educated or raised and human beings. The work of Lighthouse is an utter embarrassment to the Establishment, because it exposes how much they have tried to destroy and suppress the sheer God-made value and potential of His most precious creations, us.
I appreciate the way that Paul has constantly been seeking to understand and define what it means to be human as well as what makes us human.
The human endowment of the conscience is so significant, yet the quotes reveal it is completely misunderstood by the vast majority of the population. What I mean by that is that there’s so much more scope than people understand. It’s not just about knowing the difference between right and wrong, but the engine room of us as human beings.
Given all the slander and the smears online and in the mainstream media, it’s refreshing that we’re publishing our research insights that reveal who and what the Establishment is through their efforts to destroy us and our work.
I really love this work from Paul. Thank you. Our consciences ought to have been developed from a very young age, continually honed, and then brought into action through the choices we make.
As stated here, it is not simply a matter of knowing what is right or wrong. Our conscience spiritually leads us and has far greater depth, wisdom and knowledge than we can even begin to tap into when we have been so disconnected and cut off from it.
Thank God for Him, and for this work at Lighthouse with Paul and the community here. It is so encouraging to see how we are continually developing and honing our consciences as we grow in Christ’s love.
Thank you, and God bless. 🙏
Wow, when someone like Hitler is denouncing conscience, then that’s a red flag and warning sign right there for us not to follow his lead! But it’s clear we live in a world that, from very young, is acting on and influencing us as much as possible to violate our conscience, in other words to ignore what it’s telling us, how it’s guiding us, where it’s trying to lead us to and to do the things our conscience is trying to get us to avoid. From pornography to greed, to hedonism and debauchery, to sloth-like laziness… our society and culture these days is driving us more and more into the areas of sin and glorifying it as it does because the spirit and power behind what’s shaping secular human cultures is not our friend, to put it lightly. It’s the same that first led Eve astray and is doing so now with us. When I look back at my life and all the ways I suppressed and numbed my conscience what I did and who I became through that is so deplorable and shameful to me now. I deeply regret a lot of it and wish I’d paid more attention to and educated and strengthened my conscience instead. It’s taught me a valuable lesson but I’d rather have the clarity of an undefiled conscience instead. Thank Christ that He heals and He restores and redeems, without Him we will only drive ourselves deeper and deeper into darkness. Great article. Thank you 🙏
What a blessing, to see how Paul has understood and built upon the understanding of conscience over the years. I wasn’t directly taught nothing about our conscience as a child and/or the indispensable need to nurture and develop our conscience. The Establishment has done everything it can to ensure that we have not developed the endowments that make us human and set us apart from animals but by God’s grace, we are getting the opportunity now and we will not be stopped in providing this education to our fellow citizens/neighbours.
Thank you for delving into conscience and expressing what it is. Truly I say how much conscience is missing from our society and it’s so key to rich well formed life. Suppressing it is the gateway to problems, but I believe who do believe it’s a short to getting to what they want. Why isn’t that a part of our education system? That there tells how how things really are and we’re not meant to thrive.
When conscience is ignored, suppressed or corrupted, truth becomes negotiable, lies become acceptable, and people can justify almost anything for power or self interest. History, with examples such as Hitler, has shown us where that can ultimately lead.
What particularly struck me is the understanding that conscience is so much more than simply knowing the difference between right and wrong. It is a God given human endowment that should guide our decisions, challenge our motives and help us to live with truth, love and responsibility.
It also makes me reflect on how little I was taught about conscience growing up and how important it is that we actually develop and strengthen it. If we are not taught to listen to, educate and act upon our conscience, it becomes much easier for external influences, emotions and fear to determine how we think and act. Thank you!

It is no surprise that the evil controlling establishment will try and promote every other religion than Christianity, and ideally anything that denies God’s existence at all. Anything to delude and draw people away from making decisions that are founded in healthy, loving, conscious and fair human values and morals.
It’s so tragic that we do not learn about our human endowments as children in order to actually being able to develop them and use them in our lives. I was thinking about the wisdom above of how when our conscience is suppressed so is truth and we end up being manipulated by the modern world to believing all sorts of lies and falsehoods.
I remember reading the 7 Habits the first time and wishing that there was an entirely separate book just on the conscience. It is a deeply fascinating endowment from our creator yet one that is scarcely understood at all. Scripture speaks of the conscience but yet we as fallen beings know little about it. Thank you for sharing this distilled wisdom on the subject to shed more light.
